Inspirational Governance
By Dr. Earl R. Smith II

Directors and CEOs alike want extraordinary results from their company. Inspiring leaders lead people, managers manage employees. Leadership development entails learning to inspire ordinary people to achieve extraordinary results.

Corporate boards are responsible for enhancing shareholder value through establishing effective strategy, holding the CEO accountable and ensuring a succession of competent and motivated talent to step into leadership roles. Effective strategy is only valuable when executed properly at all levels of the organization. A major part of the execution of the strategy is communicating the strategy throughout the rank-and-file of the company.

To inspire, the strategy must be sound, but of equal importance, the presentation of the strategy must create a dynamic atmosphere of success. Employees must understand that the board of directors and senior corporate management is fully invested in the new strategy. To be successful, the new strategy cannot become one more item on a long 'to do' list of the employees. The board of directors must invest in an internal marketing campaign to inform, unite and excite the company around the new strategy.

One effective method of rolling out a new strategy is to form an advisory board composed of directors, corporate marketing personnel, and senior management. The advisory board should generate ideas and themes to promote the strategy. Excitement should be built around the launch date, with official kickoff celebrations being held in all units affected by the new strategy.

The advisory board should work to create a vision of the new. An effective communication campaign involving the CEO and the most charismatic director to 'sell' the strategy to the company employees should be devised. A good strategic plan of the communication campaign should involve repetition of the message on paychecks, uniforms, and brochures posted in break areas and other unique communications to get the message out.

The CEO should be directed by the board to implement intensive leadership development and coaching programs with the corporate management to ensure a smooth launch of the strategy. Corporate management should be informed of any incentive plans surrounding the new strategy or the impact a poor implementation of the strategy will have on the existing incentive plan.

Each operating unit should have a dedicated coach for the unit to motivate and provide feedback to the CEO regarding the implementation of the strategic plan. The unit coach should conduct an assessment of morale surrounding the plan, particularly the attitude of the unit's leadership. The unit coach should be a motivated leader seeking advancement and should receive intensive training regarding the new strategy, and leadership development training designed to assist with coaching the unit to implement successfully the new strategy.

Inspiring governance is new way of thinking for boards. Directors must live up to the expectations they set for others. Inspiring others to work for personal growth and aligning their work habits with the needs of the organization requires directors to demonstrate their personal commitment to the same principals and ideas. Directors must show the value of the new strategy and show the company employees the board is fully confident in and committed to its success.

Inspiring corporate governance is more about people than business. Building loyalty, and teams and synergies among leadership will yield extraordinary results. Corporate governance seeking relentless improvement through investing in its people and in creative innovation will outperform stagnant competition. Motivated, loyal employees will seek to create an atmosphere for peak performance. Trained employees will search for optimum outcomes at minimum costs. Directors, CEOs and corporate management investing in the personal growth of the 'wrench turners' and seeking to align the interests of the organization with the interests of the employees will have an inspired company performance exceeding the expectation of the most optimistic board of directors.
