Working At Home - The Four-Letter Words That You Need To Know! Part 3 of 3
By Cindyann Williams

Working at home, being your own boss, planning your own schedule, making as much money as you want to - it sounds like a dream come true, doesn't it? And it can be exactly that - as long as you keep in mind the work-at-home four letter words!

Don't worry - these aren't four-letter words that you'll want to be careful not to say in front your kids! (You might even think it's a good idea for the kids to learn and practice them.)

Here they are - the work-at-home, four-letter words: idea, time, goal, plan, work, file, and tink (OK, think!). These concepts are explained in a series of three articles. You are now reading the third one of those three articles.

For what we're talking about here, it doesn't matter what your home business is. It could be child care, a computer business, pet sitting, etc. The same four-letter words are crucial. I happen to run a home internet business, so a lot of my examples are based on that experience.

Third: Work. If you have been spending much time on the internet recently, exploring opportunities to make money at home, you have probably noticed a couple of things going on out there.

1. There are a lot of websites that offer you "instant riches."

2. A lot of those websites also suggest that you will soon be having "massive amount of cash stuffed into your bank account while you sleep."

Oh, how I wish that were true! If so, I would have a house overflowing with baskets of money that I just haven't had time to take to the bank yet!

Let's get real here. If you want to accomplish just about anything important in your life, you have to work for it. Plain and simple.

If you have visions of starting a home business that will somehow make a lot of money and take care of itself, you are setting yourself up for a big disappointment. It just isn't going to happen.

But - here's the good news! If you are willing to invest your own work in your own home business, it can pay off enormously.

Maybe all this "work" talk is making you a little nervous. What kind of work will you have to do? How much? How long will it take for your work to pay off for you?

Congratulations! Now you're asking serious questions and beginning to identify central issues in your home business.

What kind of work will you have to do? Well, that will depend almost entirely on what area you choose for your home business. As I've mentioned before, my home business is computer-based, so my examples tend to focus on that area, but here are some other ideas.

If you are thinking about starting a home child-care business, you will need be sure your home and yard are child-safe, you will probably need to plan (and make) meals, or at least snacks, for your day-care kids, and you will need to plan your days, errands, usual household tasks, etc. around being responsible for the children in your home. You will almost certainly have to apply to your local government (city, county, etc.) for a daycare license, and have your home approved for safety and cleanliness.

In an earlier example, I mentioned a pet-sitting business. You'll have to schedule work time for visiting other people's pets, taking care of them in your home, possibly dealing with pets that become ill while their owners are away, etc.

You may be thinking about being a "remote" office worker, doing accounting, typing, billing, etc.from your home. Those are all work/time issues that you need to anticipate and address.

Possibly the trickiest of them all is the idea of starting a home computer business. There are so many "business opportunities" out there that promise you crazy amounts of money with no work. It just won't happen - and that's the point I'm trying to make here.

No matter what home business you start, you will have to put work into it before you get results. So just expect that, and plan for it.

Fourth: File. Yeah, file, keep track of things, get organized. One of the easiest ways to "sink your own ship" in your home business is by being disorganized. You simply have to keep track of your business papers: bills, income statements, various tax documents, customer lists, tasks to be completed, etc.

If you are a "neat freak," you probably already have this handled - or at least you already have a system in mind.

If your organization system is based on where you last put something down, you're going to need to revise that approach! If you need ideas on how to do that easily, you can visit my website and get a free book that focuses totally on avoiding home business mistakes.

And the last four-letter word? Tink! OK, think! Obviously, you will be doing a lot of "tinking" as you plan for your home business success.

That covers the third two of the four-letter words that are important in starting a home business. The others are discussed in Parts 1 and 2 of this article series.
